Over the past two weeks, several equipment outages at the Philadelphia-based air traffic control center that guides planes to and from Newark Liberty International Airport, have raised questions on just how safe it is to fly at one of the nation’s busiest airports.

Low air traffic control staffing for Newark resulted in average delays of more than two hours on Monday, with 25% of all flights delayed and 87 canceled, according to data provider FlightAware.

The Federal Aviation Administration is working to address the issues, but Kirby said in the email there are procedures in place to make sure flying is safe in the meantime.
