World leaders and a dwindling group of survivors joined in a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp by the Red Army.

In all, the Nazi regime murdered 6 million Jews from all over Europe, annihilating two-thirds of Europe's Jews and one-third of all Jews worldwide. In 2005, the United Nations designated Jan. 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

King Charles will join world leaders at the commemoration event in Poland where lights will be laid in memory of those murdered.

WARSAW -- Auschwitz survivors and global leaders gathered at the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its liberation.

A ceremony has taken place in Bath to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and 80 years since the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Bath and North East Somerset Council organised the event at the Guildhall alongside the Bath Interfaith Group. The event featured poems, music and reflections.

In all, 56 survivors gathered under a huge tent on Monday set up over a gate and railway tracks at the site of the former camp.

The solemn commemoration came amid a worldwide spike in antisemitism and new surveys suggesting basic knowledge of the Holocaust is eroding.

I did not need to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps to know they were unspeakably evil. However, my somber visit embedded in my soul my deep conviction to speak up at injustices and cruelty being perpetuated. All humans have dignity, all humans have basic human rights endowed by their Creator and all deserve to have those rights respected.
