Out with the old! Savannah Guthrie wanted her new cohost Craig Melvin to make himself at home as he took on Hoda Kotb’s position on Today after she retired, but first that meant getting rid of some stuff the mom of two left behind.
Hoda Kotb bid farewell to her “Today” co-hosts Friday during her last show as one of the morning program’s anchors. Kotb, 60, announced she would be leaving “Today” back in September after 26 years with NBC.
The presents from Savannah Guthrie didn't stop at pom poms. Guthrie, who has gotten to know Hoda Kotb quite well to the point she wasn't surprised by her retirement announcement. The Today Show host gifted her colleague some other personal items, one of which was symbolic of her future days of sleeping in. As she put it:
Guthrie is now entering her 14th year with the Today show, and she worked alongside Kotb during that entire period. When it came time for her longtime colleague — and close friend — to finally sign off the air for the final time on Jan. 10, it was an emotional moment.
He'd spent all day Sunday with Guthrie in Tampa for the Sunday Night Football game, then stayed up until 11 p.m. to watch his favorite team, the Washington Commanders, win the game. His first-day, back-to-school jitters started with rising at 3:45 a.m. for his hour commute to 30 Rock.

“I was like, ‘Are they forcing you out?’ She’s like, ‘No Craig, I’m OK. I’m leaving,’” he recalled. “I was legit stunned, so much so that after she left, I went back to her dressing room, and I was like, ‘Are you sure you’re OK?’ It takes a certain kind of courage to leave anything when you’re at the height of your game.”
