Alongside the Nest updates, the Google Home app is also getting expanded support for smart locks connected via Matter, adding the ability to set passcodes, among other features. The lock updates are rolling out through the app’s “Public Preview” feature on Android, with iOS support coming in early 2025.

For years, owners of Google’s Nest Protect smoke detector have been asking when their devices would make the leap from the older Nest app to Google Home, and the answer was always the same: one day, maybe.

Starting in the Public Preview, the Google Home app is finally adding support for the Nest Protect, as well as Matter-certified smart locks.

There is a catch, though: as it makes this change, Google is increasing the price of all Workspace plans. Jerry Dischler, Google’s president of cloud applications, tells me companies will pay roughly $2 more per month per user for the AI-enabled Workspace than they were paying before.

With Gemini now included in Business and Enterprise tiers, Google is increasing the price of Workspace plans in 2025.

What's that? You don't want to pay $20 for Gemini? Well then Google will just put it in anyway and raise the price. Hooray?
